US CITIES: Vocabulary practice for ESL students: DETROIT, MI

Here's a new way to learn and practice English: We've developed a series of exercises based on descriptions of some of the most famous American cities. Here's a description of Detroit, MI. Read it and choose the right word for each blank space :) Good luck!

Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan. It is a major port city, (placed/located) across the river from Canada, on the Detroit River in the Midwest (region/zone) of the United States. The city has two (familiar/family) nicknames - Motor City and Motown. The first is because Detroit was and is one the world's largest (automatic/automotive) centers, and the second is because it was home to Motown Records, a pivotal pop/soul music label (before/back) in the 60's and 70's. Currently Detroit is (insolent/infamous) for being very run-down, and having high (rate/rates) of crime and (poor/poverty). Revitalization projects are in the (work/works), but it will take a long time before the city (twists/shakes) off its current problems.
