US CITIES: Vocabulary practice for ESL students: HOUSTON, TX

Here's a new way to learn and practice English: We've developed a series of exercises based on descriptions of some of the most famous American cities. Here's a description of Houston, TX. Read it and choose the right word for each blank space :) Good luck!



Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States. Houston is (internationally/international) known for its energy, (peculiarly/particularly) oil, and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel. The Port of Houston (rank/ranks) first in the country in international (cargo/cargos) . Houston, being the largest city in the United States without (zone/zoning) laws, has grown in an different (mannerism/manner) compared to other cities. Rather than a single "downtown" as the center of the city's employment, five (added/additional) l business (districts/neighborhoods) have grown throughout the city: Uptown, Texas Medical Center, Greenway Plaza, Westchase, and Greenspoint. Despite it's ugly sprawl and large industrial areas, the city has a fairly (actual/active) visual and performing arts (seen/scene) .
