US CITIES: English vocabulary and grammar practice: PHILADELPHIA, PA

Here's a new way to learn and practice English: We've developed a series of exercises based on descriptions of some of the most famous American cities. Here's a description of Philadelphia, PA. Read it and choose the right word for each blank space :) Good luck!

Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania. The city is (colloquially/elaborately) referred to as Philly, and known as The City of Brotherly Love. The Philadelphia metropolitan area is the fourth largest in the U.S., with some 5.8 (millions/million) people. Philadelphia is one of the oldest and most historically (dignified/significant) cities in the United States. During part of the 18th century, the city was the first (capital/capitol) and most populous city of the United States, and the second largest English (talking/speaking) city in the world after London. Philadelphia has had a (promising/prominent) role in the (story/history) of popular music - many soul (artists/artisans) from here developed what became known as the "Philadelphia sound". In (culinary/cuisine) the city is well known for its hoagies, soft pretzels, and the so- (called/named) cheese steak.
