Did you know? How is English vocabulary tested in major proficiency exams?

Most major English proficiency tests do not have a separate “Vocabulary” section, but vocabulary is tested indirectly through reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Some tests do include vocabulary-focused tasks:

1. Duolingo English Test (DET)
Vocabulary-focused tasks include “Read and select” (identify real English words) and “Listen and select” (recognize real spoken words). It directly tests word recognition and lexical knowledge with adaptive difficulty.

2. EIKEN (Japan)
Includes vocabulary tasks such as word meaning, fill-in-the-blank, and synonym/usage questions — a more traditional vocabulary testing approach, best for learners in Japan.
