TOP TIP: How to spot an adjective

1. Look for words that describe a noun
Adjectives give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea.
• The blue sky
• A happy child
Ask: What kind? Which one? How many?

2. Check if the word comes before a noun
Adjectives often appear right before the noun they describe.
• The old house
• Three red apples

3. Watch for adjectives after linking verbs
Some adjectives come after verbs like is, are, was, were, seem, feel, look.
• The dog is tired.
• The soup smells good.
If the word describes the subject (not an action), it's an adjective.

4. Try removing the word
If the sentence still makes sense but has less detail, the word might be an adjective.
• She wore a beautiful dress.
• → She wore a dress. (Still works!)

5. Be careful: not all describing words are adjectives
• Adverbs describe verbs (often end in -ly): He runs quickly
• Nouns name things, not describe them
