Every year, millions of people leave their home country and move to a new one. This is called immigration. A person who moves to a new country to live there is an immigrant.

People have many reasons for moving. Some want a better job or a higher salary. Some move to study at a university. Others move to be with their family. Some people are refugees. They have to leave their country because it is not safe, for example because of war. A refugee asks the new country for protection. This is called asking for asylum.

Moving to a new country is not easy. Immigrants often have to learn a new language. They may miss their family and friends. Finding a job can also be difficult, and there is a lot of paperwork. Many countries ask immigrants to get a visa before they arrive.

Immigration is a big topic in many countries today. Some people say that immigrants help the economy because they do jobs that the country needs, such as nurses, drivers and builders. Other people worry about the number of new arrivals. They think that there are not enough homes or jobs. Governments try to find a balance and decide who can come and stay.
