GRAMMAR REVIEW! Subject-Verb Agreement — more tricky patterns

Expressions of quantity:
With a lot of, half of, most of, some of, the verb agrees with the noun that follows:
Most of the cake is gone. (uncountable)  /  Most of the chairs are taken. (countable plural)

Separated subjects:
Phrases between the subject and verb do not affect agreement:
The list of requirements is long. (subject = list, singular)
The students in my class are very motivated. (subject = students, plural)

Relative clauses:
The verb in a relative clause agrees with the noun the clause modifies:
She is one of the students who work hardest. (who refers to students → plural)

Each / every + compound subject:
When each or every precedes a compound subject joined by and, the verb is singular:
Each teacher and student is expected to attend.
