Grammar review Choosing the right conjunction depends on the logical relationship between the two parts of the sentence.

Result: so
The traffic was terrible, so we arrived late.

Contrast: but, although, while
She invited him to the party, but he never showed up.

Reason: since, because
We stayed inside because it was pouring rain. (or: Since it was pouring rain, we stayed inside.)

Condition: unless, until
Don't sign anything until you've read it carefully.

Watch out for however: when it sits between commas mid-sentence, it connects two separate ideas the way "but" would: The recipe looked simple. The result, however, was a disaster.
