The future continuous — actions in progress in the future
The future continuous (will be + verb-ing) is used to talk about an action that will be happening at a specific point in the future, or an action that will continue over a future period of time.
Structure: will be + verb-ing
“This time tomorrow, I will be flying to New York.”
“She will be working when you arrive.”
When to use it:
• An action in progress at a specific future moment: “At 3 PM tomorrow, he’ll be giving his presentation.”
• An action ongoing throughout a future period: “We’ll be traveling all next month.”
• Two future actions happening at the same time: “I’ll be cooking while you set the table.”
• A polite way to ask about someone’s plans: “Will you be using the car tonight?”
Signal words that often trigger the future continuous:
this time tomorrow/next week, at [a specific time], while, when + present tense clause
Future continuous vs. future simple:
If the sentence just states a fact or decision about the future with no sense of an action being “in progress,” use the simple future instead:
“I will call you tomorrow.” (future simple — a single completed action)
“I will be calling clients all morning tomorrow.” (future continuous — an action in progress over time)
