This beginner-level exercise focuses on the most basic positional prepositions in English — the ones used to describe where things are in relation to each other. Getting these right is one of the first steps in building accurate everyday descriptions.




Grammar review Basic prepositions — position and direction

At beginner level, prepositions describe where people and things are in relation to each other. These are the most common ones you need to know.

Position:
in — inside: “The keys are in my bag.”
on — on a surface: “The book is on the table.”
at — at a specific point: “She’s at the door.”
under — below: “The cat is under the chair.”
next to / beside — directly beside: “Sit next to me.”
between — in the middle of two things: “She sat between Tom and Maria.”
behind — at the back of: “The garden is behind the house.”
in front of — at the front of: “There’s a car park in front of the hotel.”

Direction:
to — movement towards: “She went to school.”
from — point of origin: “He’s from Italy.”
