PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE EXERCISE 1 (ESL)

level: Upper-Intermediate/Advanced (B2/C1)

✓ Useful for IELTS ✓ Useful for Cambridge B2/C1
The past perfect continuous (had been + verb-ing) describes an action that was in progress for a period of time before another point in the past, often explaining the cause of something. Fill in each blank with the correct had been + verb-ing form; the grammar review below explains exactly when this beats the simple past perfect.

Grammar review The past perfect continuous: duration before a past moment

The past perfect continuous (had been + verb-ing) is used to talk about an action that was ongoing for some time before another action or moment in the past. It puts the focus on the duration of the activity, not just the fact that it happened.

Structure: had been + verb-ing
“His shirt was soaked because he had been sweating.”
“His hands smelled like garlic because he had been cooking.”
“We had been dancing for hours when the music finally stopped.”

When to use it:
• Explaining the cause or result of something in the past: “The bread was burnt because the oven had been overheating.”
• Emphasizing how long something had been going on before another past moment: “He had been negotiating the deal for months before it finally closed.”
• Setting the background to a past story: “We had been hiking for three hours when we spotted the summit.”

Past perfect continuous vs. past perfect simple:
Use the simple form (had + past participle) for a completed action or result; use the continuous form when the duration or the activity itself is what matters:
“She had baked the cake.” (past perfect simple: the cake is now baked, a completed result)
“She had been baking the cake.” (past perfect continuous: she was in the middle of the activity; it may or may not be finished)

Common signal words: for, since, before, when, all night/day, by the time
