How to spot an adverb
Most adverbs of manner end in -ly and describe how an action happens.
• He explained it clearly. (How did he explain it? Clearly.)
• She smiled nervously. (How did she smile? Nervously.)
An adverb usually comes right after the verb, or after the verb and its object.
• They greeted us warmly.
Watch out: not every -ly word is an adverb (friendly and lovely are adjectives), and not every adverb ends in -ly (well, late, never, always).
