Possessive pronouns replace a noun phrase entirely — they stand alone instead of sitting before a noun. This exercise also tests the distinction between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives.
Grammar reviewPossessive pronouns vs possessive adjectives
Both show ownership but are used differently:
Possessive adjectives — come before a noun: my, your, his, her, its, our, their This is my book. / Where are their keys?
Possessive pronouns — stand alone with no noun following:
first person singular: mine | second person: yours | third person masc: his
third person fem: hers | first person plural: ours | third person plural: theirs This book is mine. / The keys are theirs.
Quick test: If a noun comes directly after the word → adjective. If it stands alone → pronoun.
