Keep is a versatile verb with many phrasal combinations. Most involve the idea of continuing, staying, or preventing. Definitions are provided in brackets throughout.
Choose the correct preposition or particle to complete each of the following sentences.
1.He kept ________ (= continued) talking for three hours.
Correct answer: on — keep on = continue doing something.
2.Keep ________ my property! = Don't come onto my property!
Correct answer: off — keep off = stay away from a surface or area.
3.He was told to keep ________ (= to not go into) his sister's room.
Correct answer: out of — keep out of = stay away from or not enter a place.
4.He runs very fast. It's hard for me to keep ________ him.
Correct answer: up with — keep up with = maintain the same speed or level as someone.
5.This isn't any of your business! Keep ________ this!
Correct answer: out of — keep out of = not get involved in something.
6.He only says this to keep you ________ getting angry.
Correct answer: from — keep someone from = prevent someone from doing something.
7.Could you please keep it ________? = Could you please not be so noisy?
Correct answer: down — keep it down = be quieter.
8.He's a very private individual. = He keeps ________ himself.
Correct answer: to — keep to oneself = be private and not mix much with others.
9.Just keep ________ it. = Just keep trying to do it.
Correct answer: at — keep at = persist with something.
