C1–C2 · AdvancedLet forms a compact but important group of phrasal verbs, several of which involve the idea of allowing, releasing, or disappointing. Definitions are provided in brackets throughout.
Choose the correct preposition or particle to complete each of the following sentences.
1.They let him ________ easy. = They didn't punish him enough.
Correct answer: off — let off = not punish someone, or punish them leniently.
2.I was counting on your help, but you let me ________!
Correct answer: down — let down = disappoint someone.
3.The cat is scratching at the door. Could you please let him ________?
Correct answer: in — let in = allow to enter.
4.They let ________ ( = pretended) that nothing bad had happened.
Correct answer: on — let on = pretend or feign.
5.He's just letting ________ some steam. (= getting rid of accumulated emotion)
Correct answer: off — let off steam = release pent-up energy or emotion.
6.He let ________ a loud laugh.
Correct answer: out — let out = release or emit a sound.
7.The storm didn't let ________ ( = get weaker, stop) for three hours.
Correct answer: up — let up = decrease in intensity or stop.
8.She let me ________ on a little secret. = She shared a little secret with me.
Correct answer: in — let someone in on something = share a secret or piece of information with them.
9.Do you think they'll let us ________ (= let us finish work) early today?
Correct answer: off — let off = allow to leave or finish early.
10.Get your hands off me! = Let go ________ me!
Correct answer: of — let go of = release; stop holding.
