PHRASAL VERBS WITH LOOK — EXERCISE 1 (ESL)

Look is one of the most productive verbs in English for forming phrasal verbs. The combinations below range from the very common to the more idiomatic. Definitions are provided in brackets throughout.
Choose the correct preposition or particle to complete each of the following sentences.
1.All the children look ________ to him (= admire him).
Correct answer: up — look up to = admire or respect someone.
2.Look ________! = Be careful!
Correct answer: out — look out = be careful; watch for danger.
3.Look ________ the clouds.
Correct answer: up at — look up at = direct your gaze upward toward something.
4.The people looked ________ ( = kept watching) as the angry man continued yelling.
Correct answer: on — look on = watch an event without participating.
5.I'll look ________ on him. = I'll stop by to see how he is.
Correct answer: in — look in on someone = make a brief visit to check on them.
6.He looked ________ the magazines. = He quickly read the magazines.
Correct answer: through — look through = read or examine something quickly.
7.We did a search on her. = We looked her ________.
Correct answer: up — look up = search for information (separable).
8.Were you looking at her, or were you looking ________?
Correct answer: away — look away = turn one's eyes in another direction.
9.Monica said she would look ________ (= investigate) this matter.
Correct answer: into — look into = investigate.
10.I don't like the way he looks ________ people. ( = the way he thinks he is superior to others)
Correct answer: down on — look down on = regard someone as inferior.
