PHRASAL VERBS WITH THROW — EXERCISE 1 (ESL)
C1–C2 · AdvancedThrow produces a rich set of phrasal verbs, several of which are quite idiomatic and must be memorized as fixed expressions. Definitions are provided in brackets throughout.
Choose the correct preposition or particle to complete each of the following sentences.
1.They gave up. = They threw ________ the towel.
Correct answer: in — throw in the towel = give up or admit defeat.
2.The fact that he kept smiling threw me ________. ( = confused me)
Correct answer: off — throw someone off = confuse or mislead someone.
3.After he threw ________, ( = vomited) he no longer felt nauseous.
Correct answer: up — throw up = vomit (informal).
4.We threw ________ the garbage.
Correct answer: out — throw out = discard.
5.She threw ________ her shirt and jumped into the pool.
Correct answer: off — throw off = remove clothing quickly.
6.Put that in the garbage! = Throw that ________!
Correct answer: away — throw away = discard.
7.That's a phrase he's been throwing ________ ( = saying, bringing up, etc.) quite a lot recently.
Correct answer: around — throw around = mention or use casually in conversation.
8.The police asked them to throw ________ their weapons.
Correct answer: down — throw down = drop or put down (especially weapons).
9.To quickly/hastily put on a shirt = To throw ________ a shirt
Correct answer: on — throw on = put on clothing quickly or casually.
10.They threw him ________ of the restaurant after he got drunk and started yelling at people.
Correct answer: out — throw out = expel someone from a place.
