Quick Grammar Review: Word Choice and Vocabulary in English

Homonyms and commonly confused words

English has many word pairs that sound alike or look similar but mean completely different things. Homonyms are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and mean different things: their/there/they're, your/you're, its/it's. These are among the most common errors even for advanced writers, since the mistake doesn't affect pronunciation, only spelling.

Frequently confused word pairs

PairDifference
lose / looseLose is a verb (to not win, to misplace); loose is an adjective (not tight)
do / makeDo is used for tasks, duties, and general activities (do homework); make is used for creating or producing something (make a cake)
other / anotherAnother = one more, singular; other = additional ones, used with plural or specific nouns

Prefixes and suffixes

Learning common prefixes (un-, re-, dis-, mis-) and suffixes (-tion, -ness, -ful, -less) helps you recognize and build vocabulary quickly, since they carry predictable meaning: un- often reverses a meaning (happy → unhappy), while -less means "without" (hope → hopeless).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Their/there/they're confusion:Their going to the park. → ✓ They're going to the park.
  • Lose vs. loose:Don't loose your keys. → ✓ Don't lose your keys.
  • Do vs. make:I need to make my homework. → ✓ I need to do my homework.
